What Size Exhibition Stand Do I Need?

By Peter Symonds

Quick answer

Choose the exhibition stand around the floor space you have booked and what needs to happen inside it, not just the widest backdrop that will fit.

For a 3m x 3m space, a compact 3x2 or 3x3 portable pop-up can leave useful room for a counter and conversations. In a 4m x 3m space, a 3x3 or 3x4-style backdrop can work well if the footprint allows. From 5m x 3m upward, wider portable, fabric or modular systems give more branding area, while larger stands with meeting areas, AV or storage increasingly benefit from a planned design-and-build layout.

Always confirm the organiser's permitted footprint, maximum build height, open-side requirements and any shell-scheme restrictions before ordering.

Start with what the stand needs to do

A sales stand needs open conversation space. A product demonstration needs floor area around the product. A hospitality-led stand may need seating or a meeting space. If you need storage, screens or enclosed rooms, allow for these before deciding how much wall or backdrop to install.

Common space examples

3m x 3m: prioritise a clear backwall and visitor space. A 3x2 or 3x3 portable pop-up, fabric wall or compact modular system can work well.

4m x 3m: enough room for a stronger branded backdrop plus a counter, literature or a small demonstration area.

5m x 3m: gives more freedom for wider displays, multiple zones or a more modular layout.

6m x 4m and above: design-and-build becomes increasingly useful where the brief includes furniture, AV, storage, meeting areas or several visitor journeys.

Don't fill the whole stand with hardware

A backdrop that physically fits is not automatically the best layout. Keep entrances open, allow comfortable circulation and make sure staff can talk to visitors without blocking the aisle.

Budget also changes with floor area

For Display Wizard's current design-and-build service, the price-per-square-metre bands are £399/m² for 0–12m², £349/m² for 13–24m², and £329/m² from 25m² upward. See our exhibition stand cost guide for worked examples.

For portable options, browse pop-up display stands and exhibition stands. For a fully planned space, see exhibition stand design and build.

Exhibition Stand Size FAQs

What display should I use in a 3m x 3m exhibition space?

A compact 3x2 or 3x3 portable pop-up, fabric backwall or small modular display can work well, provided you retain enough usable floor space for staff, visitors and any counter or furniture.

Should the backwall be the full width of my exhibition space?

Not necessarily. A slightly narrower backdrop can create better circulation and make room for furniture or demonstrations. Plan the visitor journey before maximising the wall width.

When should I use a custom design-and-build stand?

Design-and-build is particularly useful for larger spaces or briefs that require multiple zones, storage, meeting rooms, furniture, AV or a more distinctive structural layout.

What should I check with the exhibition organiser?

Confirm the exact floor dimensions, maximum build height, open-side rules, shell-scheme restrictions, power provision, rigging rules and any venue-specific health and safety requirements before finalising the stand.
